De Stijl - Yeahvolution! (White Jazz/MNW JAZZCD 62)
1-2-3! And 4! The Yeahvolution starts here. Jesper Kern reports.
This is what it's all about! Forget about The Hives and their all too well rehearsed mannerisms. If you feel the need to embrace the Swedish, look no further.
On this, their debut album, De Stijl manage to encompass everything that makes punk the most energetic form of music. The songs are dead short, leaving no pause for breath or unnecessary thought, just thirteen perfectly aimed stabs at the black, rotting heart of mediocrity.
Singer Joakim Kaminsky sounds like a cross between Jon Spencer and T.V Smith of The Adverts, spitting rather than singing at times. The exquisitely minimalist guitar solos bring to mind the splendour of Manchesters finest, The Buzzcocks.
The songs are simple enough, but well constructed and stripped of any excess flab. If anything, some of the tracks sound a bit under produced and demo-ish, but that might be my speakers, cracked from playing "Date Times" over and over on full volume, much to the dismay of my ill tempered neighbours.
If the world is even remotely just, this little a-bomb of an album will raise eyebrows and airplay on a massive scale. De Stijl is the sound of training wheels coming of bicycles. Permanently. The Yeahvolution is here. Don't let it pass you by.
